Front Porch Memories Program

Oral history has been with us for generations. Oral traditions have been passed down to inform and educate. It is so much more important now as many think their stories don’t matter, and if we don’t capture these stories today, they may be gone forever.

In 2023, the Davenport Historical Society created its own oral collection program. Once or twice a month, we schedule Davenport residents who are 75 years or older and have lived in Polk County for 50 years or more to sit on our front porch (indoor) and talk about growing up in Northeast Polk County. We video the interviews to save these life stories for future generations.

It’s easy and fun to visit with others and reminisce about the “old days.” There is no audience – just someone filming the stories.

Each year one person is selected to have their story nominated for the Polk Pioneer Program sponsored by the Polk County Historical Association (PCHA).

These Polk Pioneers are honored during the PCHA annual meeting and luncheon.

Congratulations to our 2025 Polk Pioneer honorees, Warren McKnight and Virginia McKnight Glass, pictured with Joyce Hunter.
